B2/C1 I Can't Give You Anything but Love: Screwball Comedies

Quick-witted dialogue, slapstick, battle of the sexes, class issues and very often a feisty female protagonist: These are the ingredients of the screwball comedy, a Hollywood subgenre especially popular in the 1930s and 1940s – with various later films taking up some of these elements. We shall watch and discuss four screwball comedies, Frank Capra's classic "It Happened One Night" with Claudette Colbert and Clark Gable, Howard Hawks' "Bringing Up Baby" with Katharine Hepburn and Cary Grant, Ernst Lubitsch's "To Be or Not to Be" with Carole Lombard, and Billy Wilder's "Some Like It Hot" with Marilyn Monroe, Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon. The films will be shown in English with English subtitles.
